It is surrounded by figures symbolizing the important waterways for the city; the Gardon, the Rhône, the fountain of Eure (source of Uzès, starting point of the old Roman aqueduct) and the fountain of Nîmes. As coach, Gérard Houllier was not retained at the head of the club following the European failures of the previous season, he was replaced by Alain Perrin. The Fine Arts Museum, built in 1907 to plans by Nîmes architect Maximilien Raphel, was refurbished in 1986-1987 by architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte. We should also note the presence of very many mazets, small one-room rural constructions, in bonded masonry (coated or not with mortar) and covered with tiles, which in the 19th century served as Sunday houses for small people who owned a plot in the scrubland. Note the presence of an exceptional 15th century tondo in enamelled terracotta by the Italian artist Della Robia. Near Square Antonin is Place d'Assas, a town center square with an imposing fountain designed by artist Martial Raysse in the mid-1980s. This artist is also behind the crocodile fountain in the Place du Marché, located in the heart of the Ecusson, a work created with the Italian sculptors Silvio and Vito Tongiani. The monumental statue dedicated to Antonin, erected in the center of the square in 1874, is the work of sculptor Auguste Bosc.
The marble fountain inaugurated in 1851 in the center of the esplanade, the Pradier fountain, is the work of the sculptor James Pradier and the architect Charles Questel, author of the Saint-Paul church.
